REMEDIAL MASSAGE
Remedial Massage is a holistic treatment and involves the use of massage and a wide range of diagnostic techniques to treat a condition.
Remedial massage can be helpful in treating specific areas of muscle tension caused by stress or injury. The therapy also helps to get the blood flowing to injured tissues to speed up the repair process. Remedial massage can also be used for relaxation and general wellbeing. The therapy has both short and long-term effects on the body. It is important to first gain diagnosis for a health condition from appropriate specialists prior to visiting a remedial massage therapist.

BACK PAIN
Most back pain is caused by problems in the soft tisssues: muscles, tendons and ligaments rather than the bones. Recent research has suggested that blockage of arteries to the lower back is a major cause of pain and malfunction, in a similar fashion to the problems caused by silting arteries in other areas of the body. Remedial massage is extremely effective at ameliorating back pain.
Massaging the back increases the blood flow to tired and overused muscles. The stretches that I use encourage a return to full movement of the spine, reducing the strain on the individual muscle groups that support the back. While massaging I notice any muscles that are under persistent strain becoming very hard with constant contraction and I will release them, making everyday use less tiring and movement freer. As you get up to walk away you feel taller; it feels lovely!
RSI Repetitive Injury Syndrome and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Using muscles through the same motion, over and over again can cause prolonged and acute pain. Sometimes this is because the muscles remain contracted even when they are not in use. Sometimes this happens through using a computer mouse, keyboard or till. It also happens while driving.
One helpful tip is to frequently take the same muscles through their full range of movement - taking a stretch - while doing the usual job. One driver I have treated has been able to alleviate the problem of stiff shoulder (perhaps caused by looking one way only before pulling away) by taking his neck and shoulders through a wide range of movement periodically.
Remedial massage in combination with some resisted muscle movements can re-establish correct function of the muscles, releasing them from spasm. This prolonged contraction is painful and prevents correct usage of the limb concerned also causing problems in the other muscles that take over to try to keep the body functioning.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be usefully treated, the soft tissue of the forearm can usually be felt to be tight to the touch. When these muscles are overused they swell causing constriction at the wrist. Massage and some release movements can lead to reduction in pain, especially at night. This treatment can completely avoid the need for surgery.
